Forms of Doctoral Education Internationalisation in China
Challenges, Opportunities and Lessons Learned
China has become the second largest country globally in doctoral education, and internationalisation is now a significant factor in its development. The country has also become a major player in international doctoral education in the world. In particular, the large number of Chinese doctoral students studying abroad has reshaped the landscape of international doctoral education in the developed world. Also, the programmes to recruit global experts have brought numerous international faculty to China. In this sense, China is a centre of push and pull forces for global, high quality talents. This article intends to report on current forms of Chinese doctoral education internationalisation (DEI), as well as present and discuss certain tensions and opportunities. These challenges and opportunities provide lessons for the future, for China itself and for other emerging and developing countries.
